Purine Salvage, Proper Gout Diet Prevents And Eases Gout Symptoms

Also referred to as "the disease of kings", the occurrence and development of gout are strongly determined by improper diet. In the past, the disease predominantly affected nobles and royalty, due to their access to an abundance of foods that are known today to have high risks of causing gout. These days, many people are still confronted with gout, as they consume foods that interfere in the normal activity of the body. Mostly people living in developed societies are the ones who tend to be affected by gout. The consumption of some exotic foods like seafood (oysters, caviar, calamari, sushi) or improper diets that contain a lot of meats (pork, poultry, beef) are the factors that seem to facilitate the occurrence and the development of the disease. Statistics indicate that people who live in less-developed countries have a smaller chance of developing gout. Also, research results reveal the preponderance of obese people among those who are suffering from different forms of gout.

A proper gout diet and a healthy lifestyle are the best means of preventing and easing the symptoms of gout. It is a fact that there is no specific diets for gout and the treatment often prescribed for the disease usually acts by controlling pain attacks and inflammation. There is little that medicines can do for the patients who suffer from gout, especially for those who have chronic forms of the disease. Proper gout diet can both ease the symptoms of gout and prevent injury and complications. It is known to be the best way of handling the effects of the disease. Shocked

  • Proper gout diet replaces the foods that are considered to cause gout due to their high levels of purine with healthy, better tolerated foods.
  • Foods that are rich in saturated fats should also be avoided.

The foods that are known to have high levels of purine are meats like pork, beef, lamb, poultry, organ meats (brain, kidneys, liver and heart), fish and seafood (sardines, mackerel, oysters, caviar, calamari and crabs) and fat dairy products such as cheese, milk and butter. Even some vegetables like spinach, beans and peas are known to conatin large amounts of purines. However, green vegetables are thought to have no malign effects to the body. Fruits not only have low levels of purines, (and they are strongly recommended in any gout diet) but they also contain vitamins and minerals that are vital in the proper functioning of the body. Vitamin C, contained by most fruits, is a powerful natural anti-oxidant which helps in easing the symptoms of gout. Rolling Eyes

Gout is a type of rheumatoid arthritis that causes pain and inflammation of the joints. The joints of the lower body seem to be affected the most. People with gout experience discomfort, swelling, local irritation and redness, itching sensations, pain, sometimes feeling a sensation of cold around the affected areas, the skin in those regions often looking stretched. Gout can also affect skin and soft tissue such as muscles and tendons, making them less flexible. Gout is known to be caused mainly by the presence in excess of crystallized uric acid deposits inside the body, which are difficultly eliminated by the kidneys. Improper diet can lead to more accumulation of uric acid in the body, as some foods that contain high levels of purine are synthesized by the body into uric acid. Evil or Very Mad

Most fruits and vegetables are high in potassium. Potassium regulates electrolytes in the body and has the ability to get rid of uric acid crystals from the blood. Potassium-rich fruits are bananas, avocados, apricots and cantaloupe. High-potassium vegetables include spinach, potatoes, asparagus, beets and pumpkin. Surprised.

Overview of Gout Gout is a systemic disease caused by the buildup of uric acid in the joints, causing inflammation, swelling, and pain. This condition can develop for two reasons. The liver may produce more uric acid than the body can excrete in the urine, or a diet of rich foods (e.g., red meat, cream sauces, red wine) puts more uric acid into the bloodstream than the kidneys can filter. In both cases, a condition called hyperuricemia results. Over time, the uric acid crystallizes and settles in the joint spaces, most commonly in the first metatarsal phalangeal joint of the big toe or in the ankle joint. Signs and Symptoms The most common symptoms of gout are inflammation, swelling, and tenderness in the joint of the first toe. Touching or moving it is intensely painful and patients often say it hurts to have as much as a bedsheet over the toe. Gout develops quickly and typically occurs in only one joint at a time. Symptoms may develop in two or three joints simultaneously, but this is rare. If widespread symptoms occur, the condition is probably not gout. Diagnosis The most reliable way to diagnose gout is to examine the joint fluid for uric acid crystals. This is done by drawing fluid from the joint with a needle and examining it under a polarized light microscope. Although the test is invasive, the results are definitive, and a positive result facilitates proper treatment and quick relief. Gout natural treatments for gout involves decreasing the amount of uric acid in the joint. If dietary habits are the cause, the patient's lifestyle must be changed to avoid the condition. Gout is readily corrected with patient cooperation, and it is usually not treated unless it occurs frequently. Colchicine is a common medication for treating acute gout attacks. If continuous medication is necessary, the two most common choices are probenecid and allopurinol. Prevention Alcohol and rich foods are primary contributors to excessive uric acid levels. Although some patients have a genetic predisposition to excessive uric acid production, most gout patients have normal kidneys and uncontrolled dietary habits. Prevention is the best defense against the disease. Many patients who suffer from gout continue to indulge, and suffer frequent attacks as a result. Although medication makes it possible to live with gout, the continued accumulation of uric acid in the joints eventually damages them, seriously inhibiting movement.

Gout is a painful and sudden illness that can affect joints. It is caused by the accumulation of excess uric acid, which is normally removed through the urine. The crystals of uric acid can then accumulate in joints and cause inflammation and pain. Often patients are not able to get to their healthcare provider right away. If it is a first attack the symptoms can be alarming. Fortunately, it is rarely life threatening and often resolves in a few days even without treatment. However everyone who gets an attack should see their healthcare provider since there are many excellent treatments available. But what can one do while at home?

The home remedy can include NSAID's but you may want to get a diagnosis first since other conditions can cause joint swelling including other forms of arthritis such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Sometimes a joint infection can also look like gout especially if it is hot and red and swollen. If it is quite clear that it is gout, especially if it has affected a joint before, local ice and heat may be applied if comfortable. Taking an NSAID will help as long as the side effects are kept in mind which include stomach ulcer formation and at times high blood pressure. Some examples of NSAIDs are ibuprofen, have a proper living with colochicine. Wink

  • Decreasing the intake of alcohol is also helpful since alcohol affects the elimination of uric acid.
  • Although the effect of foods that cause gout is only small it must not be forgotten.
  • Meat and seafood are common causes of gout if taken in excess.

Recent research has shown that vitamin C lowers uric acid level but whether this means something in patients with gout is not clear. Avoiding medication that cause gout such as diuretics or "water pills" or adjusting doses after discussing with the healthcare provider can also help.
